    STUDIOCANAL acquires Paddington Bear intellectual property rights

    Paris, June 20, 2016- STUDIOCANAL is pleased to announce the acquisition of Paddington and Company Limited which owns all the intellectual property rights apart from publishing rights in Michael Bond's classic children's character Paddington Bear. At the same time STUDIOCANAL have acquired The Copyrights Group Limited which acts as merchandise licensing agent for Paddington Bear, as well as representing several other famous literary properties.

    By these acquisitions STUDIOCANAL takes full ownership of the PADDINGTON brand worldwide, including such activities as live entertainment, video games and theme parks.

    Studiocanal Acquires Paddington Bear Brand, Plans Third Paddington Movie

    PARIS - Vivendi's Studiocanal, Europe's biggest film-TV production-distribution company, has acquired Paddington and Company and the Copyrights Group, two purchases that give Studiocanal full ownership of nearly all of the Paddington Bear brand worldwide.

    The deal marks Studiocanal's first acquisition of an iconic European intellectual property. It comes as Studiocanal and parent Vivendi have identified the ownership and exploitation of European properties, especially big, resonant European culture icons, as one of its cardinal growth strategies.

    Studiocanal is also "committed" to a third Paddington movie, Studiocanal chairman-CEO Didier Lupfer said. "Paddington 2," produced by David Heyman ("Harry Potter," "Gravity") and directed by Paul King, is gearing up to go into production in October, tracking for a late 2017 release.

    Unveiled on Monday, the acquisition of Paddington and Company and the Copyrights Group gives Studiocanal filmed and TV usage of the classic children's book character, as well as use of the Paddington Bear IP in live entertainment, video games and theme parks, details which suggest the scale of Vivendi's ambition for the beloved Peruvian bear.

    Paddington 2 Sets Production Date

    Studiocanal introduces at Cannes the smash-hit comedy sequel, which will go into production this October

    CANNES - Produced by David Heyman, "Paddington 2" will go into production in October in the U.K., Studiocanal confirmed Tuesday at Cannes. Film is also for sale at the Cannes market making it in all likelikhood the biggest-budgeted movie to be sold in the marketplace this year. The original "Paddington" was budgeted at $55 million and grossed nearly $270 million worldwide.

    No cast is set but after the smash-hit success of the original "Paddington," it is expected that Ben Whishaw (Paddington) along with Hugh Bonneville and Sally Hawkins will reprise their roles.

    Directed again by Paul King, and co-written by King and Simon Farnaby, "Paddington 2" will be released on Nov. 24 2017 in the U.K. according to Studiocanal's Rodolphe Buet.

    Peggy Fortnum Obituary

    Copyrights is sad to announce that Peggy Fortnum, the original illustrator of the Paddington Bear novels by Michael Bond, passed away on the 28th March 2016. Peggy was an artist in various media, designer, book illustrator and teacher. She studied at the Tunbridge Wells School of Art and then at the Central School of Art in London. After being discharged from service during the Second World War following injury she concentrated on illustrating children's books from 1944 to 1989. She also worked on the BBC Television programmes Jackanory and Playschool.
