'A tramp, a gentleman, a poet, a dreamer, a lonely fellow, always hopeful of romance and adventure.'
Charlie Chaplin describing his Little Tramp character.
Introduction
Born in London in 1889 into a family of entertainers, Chaplin eventually left England for the U.S. and Hollywood to embark on a film career. There he created his Little Tramp character, who, with his moustache, hat, cane, baggy trousers and big boots, became an icon that is universally recognized to this day.
Chaplin’s creativity was total. He wrote, directed, produced, scored the music and performed in cinematic masterpieces such as City Lights, Modern Times and Limelight. Chaplin received a Special Academy Award for Life Achievement in 1972 and a British knighthood from Queen Elizabeth in 1975. Sir Charles Spencer Chaplin died peacefully in his sleep in 1977 at his home in Vevey, Switzerland at the age of 89.
