Mabel Lucie Attwell’s iconic chubby children and cheeky sayings are being rediscovered by a new generation in a market where retro is fashionable again. Her cute and nostalgic imagery is applicable to a wide range of consumer products, especially stationery, kitchen and bathroom wares.
Mabel Lucie Attwell illustrated more than 1,000 postcards and 50 books and was enormously popular in the period 1920 to 1955. In the period following the Second World War it was estimated that most households in Britain owned either her famous bathroom or kitchen plaque.
Her style, using images of children with cheeky sayings, formed the basis of Valentine of Dundee's huge range of postcards and greeting cards. This lead to many advertising commissions, including London Underground poster campaigns and advertisements for brands and products including Swan Fountain Pens, Velvet Skin Soap and Jaeger Footwear.
