The first Horrible Histories were published in 1993 and sales now total 9 million across nearly 40 titles in the UK and Commonwealth countries. Scholastic has an ongoing commitment to the continued development of the Horrible Histories publishing programme, with almost fifty titles to be published by the end of 2006.

 

 

Media and Profile

 

Television:

  • The production of a Horrible Histories live action TV series (sketch-show based) will commence in early 2008 for screening in Autumn 2008 on BBC television.

 

Publishing:

  • Scholasticwill launch the Horrible Histories Awful Adventures series in July 2008.
  • Reissues, puzzle books, action packs, handbooks and annuals are planned through to 2009.
  • Novelty books are planned through to 2010, including a pop-up book.
  • The Terrible Tudors is the best selling Horrible Histories publication to date.
  • The Horrible Histories Collection partwork from Eaglemoss has achieved total UK sales over 10 million with 80 issues published. A relaunch of the partwork is planned for September 2008, following a test in January 2008, supported by £1.5 million TV spend.
  • A Beano covermount promotion in September 2007 saw 100,000 copies of The Terrible Tudors book and poster attached to the magazine.

 

Stageshows

  • The second production of the Horrible Histories stage show, The Awful Egyptians & The Ruthless Romans was on national tour until December 2007, following the successful stage show tour of The Terrible Tudors & Vile Victorians. Further details with tour dates on www.birminghamstage.net
  • The Terrible Tudors stage show relaunched in January 2008 and on national tour until Summer 2008, followed by a further tour in Autumn 2008. Relaunch of Vile Victorians also planned.

 

Partner promotions:

  • A bespoke mini-map guide to the horrible highlights of Warwick Castle is currently available free of charge to visitors for the second year running. 20,000 guides were used by visitors in the first two weeks of publication. Hatfield House is planning a mini-guide for 2008.
  • The Horrible Histories audio book resulted in Kellogg’s most successful promotional giveaway ever. Six audio CD inserts and foul fact panels featured on 27 million packs of cereal.
  • The Daily Telegraph remains an ongoing partner with Horrible Histories.
  • The Royal Armouries exhibit at Salford Imperial War Museum from Spring 2008 to the end of 2008.
  • The Horrible Histories books were brought to life in a new Cruel Crime and Painful Punishment themed exhibition at the Royal Armouries Museum in Leeds until the end of October 2007. A further exhibition is planned for 2009 to tie in with the anniversary of the end of World War 2.
  • The Horrible Highlights trail exhibits at the Imperial War Museum from May 2008 to the end of 2008. The theme is The Frightful World War to coincide with the end of  World War One.
  • Lothian buses report doubling of ticket sales on the back of the Horrible Histories bus tour launched in Edinburgh in April 2007. A roll-out to other cities is under discussion.
  • Discussion with a major leisure attraction partner for a number of high profile activities at key sites throughout the UK from 2009 through to 2012.

 

Online

  • The Horrible Histories site www.horrible-histories.co.uk launched in 2007.
  • The Terrible Tudors and Vile Victorians toured nationally January–July 2006 ahead of a brand new production based on The Rotten Romans and Awful Egyptians Autumn 2006.
